The goal of Wisconsin's Floodplain Management Program is to protect people and their property from unwise floodplain development, and to protect society from the costs which are associated with developed floodplains. Through floodplain zoning, the county can regulate how development can actually occur within floodplains. Under this program, Chippewa County is required to zone its flood-prone areas. The state has set minimum standards for counties, cities, and villages to follow, but these local governments can set more restrictive standards if deemed necessary.
