Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (POWTS)
The Chippewa County Private Sewage System Ordinance is administered county-wide. The purpose of the ordinance is to promote and protect public health, safety, and the environment by assuring the proper siting, design, installation, inspection, and management of private sewage systems.
All structures or premises in the county that are permanently or intermittently intended for human habitation or occupancy, which are not served by a public sewer and have running water plumbed into the structure, are required to have a system for holding or treatment and dispersal of sewage and wastewater.

POWTS Maintenance
Since 1985, Chippewa County has required mandatory maintenance or pumping of tanks for all private sewage systems. Proper maintenance and use of a private sewage system can help increase its life expectancy.
