Mental Health Training

Trainings Offered by Health Department Staff

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer - the three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.

Just as people who are trained in CPR and the Heimlich maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year, thousands of Americans, like you, are saying Yes to save the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

QPR covers:

  • Common myths and facts about suicide
  • How to persuade suicidal individuals to get help
  • Tips for asking the suicide question
  • Warming signs and risk factors of suicide
  • Ways of referring people who are at-risk to resources

This training is approximately one hour long and is intended for groups of 30 or fewer. After a suicide death, it is recommended to wait at least 90 days before holding a training, with the best practice being a six-month delay.
