Spring Weight Limits

In accordance with Wisconsin State Statute 349.16, the Chippewa County Highway Commissioner may "impose special weight limitations on any such highway or portion thereof which, because of weakness of the roadbed due to deterioration or climatic conditions or other special or temporary condition, would likely be seriously damaged or destroyed in the absence of such special limitations."

Each year, the Chippewa County Highway Department utilizes several frost tubes around the County to monitor roadway frost depths. Temporary weight limitations are placed to protect the pavement as the frost leaves the roadbed. The pavement is especially vulnerable during this time when heavy soils beneath the pavement structure have a trapped, saturated layer above the frost.

Weight restrictions and dates will be posted on this page as soon as they are available. Please bookmark this page and be sure to check if the route you wish to travel has any restrictions. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

2025 Chippewa County spring weight limits will end on Monday, April 14th.
